Why Is My Huawei Modem Slow? 6 Causes and Fixes
Published · August 5, 2026
A slow Huawei modem almost always has an identifiable cause. Here are the six most common ones, ordered from the simplest to the most technical, with the fix for each.
1. Poor Modem Placement
LTE signal quality depends heavily on position. A modem stored in a drawer, behind the TV, or downstairs receives a noticeably weaker signal.
Fix: place the modem near a window, and the higher the better. Use Signal Finder in Huawei Manager while rotating or moving the modem until the signal metrics (RSRP, SINR) look best. The full walkthrough is in the band lock guide.
2. The Modem Locked onto a Weak Band
The modem tends to pick the first LTE band available, and that band is not always the strongest at your location.
Fix: open LTE Band Lock and pin the modem to the band that measures strongest. If your carrier supports it, combine bands with carrier aggregation like B3+B1+N40. This is the single most effective fix for a slow connection.
3. Congested WiFi Network
Too many devices on the same WiFi, or interference from your neighbor’s network, can drag speeds down.
Fix: check the WiFi device management guide to see who is connected and block unknown devices. Use the 5 GHz band if your modem supports it.
4. Device Too Far from the Modem
A phone far from the modem negotiates a connection with weak signal strength, so speeds drop.
Fix: move closer, or add a WiFi extender or repeater. The Huawei Manager dashboard shows live WiFi signal quality to help you diagnose this.
5. The Modem Needs a Restart
After long uptime, modem firmware can degrade: connection tables fill up, caches accumulate, and DNS stops responding.
Fix: restart the modem (unplug it for 30 seconds) on a regular schedule, for example once a week. It is the simplest fix and often works immediately.
6. Data Cap Reached or Throttled
Sometimes the problem is not the modem. Your data plan may have run out or been speed-limited.
Fix: check your data usage before blaming the hardware.
